I just left my fancy gym here in Hoboken. I have a new routine where I am circuit training and have to constantly move around the gym quickly to different machines. The faces and the bodies here in Hoboken just are not the same as my 90’s bodybuilding gym in Manhattan, which was aptly named “Pumping Iron Gym.” It was a no nonsense gym, its members ranged from black and latino men and women from Spanish and lower Harlem to Twyla Tharp , Gregory Hines, Bill Murray, Sigorney Weaver,John F. Kennedy, Jr., and many more famous people It is still there, up on East 91st Street, right across from the NYPD precinct. I have yet to find any character or characters in the predominantly white bread world where I now train.

1. To avoid injury, you should always do a light warm-up set of 15 reps before each exercise.
2. Dropset- When you exchange a heavy weight for a lighter one in the middle of a set in order to gain more reps this is called a ‘dropset’. Dropsets are optional and are to be done as the last set of each exercise.
3. Smith machine- Many of these exercises; such as flat bench presses, the incline bench press, shoulder presses, squats and lunges can be done on what is known as the Smith machine for variation.

TV: Aerobics is extremely important and too many bodybuilders and fitness competitors are “cardio-phobic.” It’s a common belief that aerobics makes you to lose muscle, but I’ve never found this to be true. Inadequate nutrition is the main cause of muscle loss, not aerobics. The problem is that many people decrease their calories a lot and also increase their cardio at the same time. They fail to realize that simply by increasing their cardio, they are creating a calorie deficit and this alone is sufficient to initiate fat loss.
