Realities Of Competitions

Sometimes a good fitness/figure woman might not do well in a local show due to the luck of the draw. She may have natural caliber but in a smaller contest may appear to be too big on muscular. This is the time when such a competitor should be moving up to a junior level show.

Doing these Junior shows (Jr. USA and Jr. Nationals) is a great way for moving up the ladder. You can get known as a winner, so when you do the Nationals or USA you do not get lost in the line up of 20 - 40 women. This is one advantage of being in the NPC as opposed to a Galaxy type organization. With those organizations you have to go right to the top without having the luxury of learning and developing. It's always a shame when one puts in six months of training, all the dieting, practice and money spent and traveling, just to get a minute's look.

I need to stress one point, do this for your own satisfaction. There really is not much money as a pro and very few turn pro. Keep this in mind and it will be a very healthy and enjoyable journey.

Remember to keep this perspective as it is in your whole life time just a short period.

Also to keep in mind is to try not to get caught up in all the attention you may get. Stay true to yourself and do not change. You are who you are and pictures in a magazine do not change that.

That is why I like a girl like Kelly Ryan. She is one of the best in our sport. Yes, she is always trying to help the others whether they are pro or just starting to think about competing. Use her as a role model.

Someday I'll write about not being star struck by the Pro's and how not to be exploited by the numerous promises of photographers, shows, and others.

In the meantime there are a couple of great WEB sites I always refer to competitors. One is KimHartt.com and Jon Lindsey's guidelines. A few others are muscelcontest.com and NPCnewsonline.com/new/
