Lori Braun on Jamie Hankin
"Jamie is one of the best photographers that I know. He is artistic and I enjoy working with him."
"Jamie makes the following offer to all Femalemuscle.com female athletes."
New York, New York
My name is Jamie Hankin and I am a professional photographer. I have been in the business for about 15 years and have shot for such clients as Nike, Reebok, Lady Foot Locker, Lord & Taylor, J. Crew, L.L. Bean and others. I am a graduate of Pratt Institute and have taught seminars in studio photography as a guest instructor. I have recently had a show of my work at the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, New York.
I am doing a photographic series of portraits of women athletes. The motivation behind the project is twofold. First, after years of fashion photography, I have become disenchanted with the whole notion of "fashion", its transparent superficiality, its whimsical manipulation of society in general and women in particular and, most of all, the message it sends to young women that anorexia, "heroin chic", victimization and weakness are desirable qualities to have, if you want to be hip.
Still, the second reason is the fact that I love the female form and consider it to be one of nature's wonders. In rejecting fashion, I believe that I am reducing the admiration to its most basic level and hope to create heroic, almost mythical images. I fully believe in the "goddess" imagery and hope to illustrate a powerful, enabled, independent ideal of women to be both an inspiration and role model for men and women alike.
I am looking for women of all sports and disciplines who would like to be photographed for this project. At this time, there is no completion date or deadline, no book deal or magazine story. However, I plan to pursue both a book publisher and submit pictures to magazines, as well as a gallery show of some sort, upon the completion of the project.
If you are interested, I will send you some samples of past work for you to have. I hope that you will be able to see the classical quality that I try to bring to my work. I hate this word, but I believe that my spiritual nature comes out in my photography, as I spend a lot of time researching, planning and executing each project.
Thank you for your interest.
