P-E-N-I-S. Penis. Why are we presenting an article about penises and Viagra? Because Erectile Dysfunction is generally not a 'hot topic' of conversation and there are facts that should be disseminated about this issue. A man can be physically fit and strong and still suffer from ED. VIAGRA is a prescription medication used to treat erection difficulties, such as Erectile Dysfunction. Since it first became available in 1998, VIAGRA has helped more than 16 million men around the world improve their sex lives.
The social and cultural pressures regarding a man's penis size and his ability to perform have existed throughout many cultures and date as far back in history as 6 BC. This long history of social pressure - and in some cases obsession - adds considerably to the anxiety of those suffering from ED.
For example, Ancient Egyptians and the Mayans of South America would decorate fertility temples with penises carved from stone, often appearing much larger than would be expected as the normal proportional size. In the King James version of the Bible references can be found to the ancient Egyptians and penis size/enlargement. Ezekiel 16:26 and Ezekiel 23:20, paraphrased, 'Egyptians were hung like donkeys and had the ejaculate of a horse.' Well, that comment makes one wonder what the poor scribe was thinking as he took down that completely illogical statement; not discounting the obvious fallacy of the statement itself of course, but in addition horses are larger Equids than donkeys!
Other cultures throughout the world have developed somewhat dubious methods of penis enlargement to cope with their perception of 'deficiencies.' Some of these include:
Penis Weights
The Polynesians, Sadhu Indians of India, and Cholmec Indians all used stretching methods consisting of hanging weights attached to the penis. Weight hanging was often initiated early in life, often in puberty if not before. Most of these cultures kept the weights attached permanently, not removing them until reaching adulthood. The consequences of this dedication towards penis enlargement were often deformation and complete impotence of the penis!
The Arabic Jelq
The Arabic cultures of the Middle East and the Sudan supposedly developed the penis-enlargement technique known as the 'jelq.' This technique involves a milking action applied to a semi-erect penis, which stretches and engorges the penis. Over time, the continued jelq sessions were supposed to result in greater penis length, thickness, and strength. It is also interesting to note that the men known as Eunuchs - later referred to as 'castrati' - are first found in these cultures, but that is another story entirely. Talk about the 'haves' and the 'have nots'… (If you want to read about the 'castrati' check this link: http://www.cix.co.uk/~velluti/cast-what.htm)
The Penis Enlargement Pump
Here we find the 'technological revolution' in penis enlargement. The year 1913 brought the quest for penis enlargement to an even greater obsession among society. Otto Ledever, of Austria, is credited with the invention of the vacuum penis pump. He received a patent for his invention in 1917. The penis pump works under the principle of negative air pressure (a vacuum). The penis is inserted into a tube or cylinder, then the air is extracted using a vacuum pump. The resulting vacuum pressure around the penis causes engorgement of the penis tissues which is claimed to result in enlargement of the penis with repeated use over time.
Now that we have discussed the obsession with the penis and the resulting social pressures that have existed over the millennia, we can now discuss something more reasonable and relevant. While there is obviously little credible evidence that a man's penis can be enlarged, Erectile Dysfunction can be treated.
VIAGRA. We know Bob Dole uses it; and so do over 16 million other men worldwide. Erectile Dysfunction affects the physical and emotional well-being of many men. Studies show that about half of all men in the United States between the ages of 40 and 70 have ED to some degree. Despite the common myth, ED is not simply a result of aging. It is more likely to be caused by an underlying health problem. Some causes of Erectile Dysfunction/Impotence can be:
- high blood pressure
- high cholesterol
- diabetes
- heart disease
- depression
- stress
- injuries, operations
- certain medications
Pfizer - the manufacturer of VIAGRA - says when taken correctly, VIAGRA works for most men. VIAGRA improves erections in most men no matter how long they have had ED, what caused it, how often they have it, or how old they are.
VIAGRA works by increasing blood flow to the penis. It is not a hormone or an aphrodisiac. VIAGRA can work in as quickly as 30 minutes. VIAGRA works for at least 4 hours and, in most patients, VIAGRA can be taken as little as once a day.
Now that the facts have been disseminated, put this matter into perspective and be thankful that you are living in 2003!!!!
