Arnold - Still Pumped at 50
An unabashed tribute
When I was a teenager, I went to see "Conan the Barbarian" I fell in love with Arnold Schwarzenegger's muscles. I sat in the movie theatre staring up at this amazing man wondering who he was. I saw the movie three times that month and brought all of my friends with me to see Arnold flex. I have followed his career ever since. When I was in college, I saw the movie The Terminator and was totally surprised at what a great movie it was. I had not even heard of it before that day. What an incredible movie! To this day, when Arnold has a movie out, I will see it even if it is a bomb. Personally, I enjoy his comedies. Some of my favorites was Junior, Kindergarten Cop and Twins. Arnold can play a great funny guy! He makes me laugh everytime. Maybe it is the silly look on his face when he says his lines. It is as if he is amazed at what is coming out of his mouth.
Pumping Iron is a classic. Filmed in 1977 and directed by George Butler, Arnold got a chance to play himself. He did eventually go on to winning the Mr.. Olympia title seven times. The movie is a behind the scenes movie about bodybuilding and competition. Worth seeing. Lou Ferrigno also stars in the film. This film has inspired many male and female athletes to this day. Once when I was at the Arnold Classic, a hugh and popular bodybuilding competition which is held in Ohio each year, I saw Arnold a few times. He was very nice to everyone. He has an extremely strong presence.
How could you not admire this man? He comes to the U.S. not speaking a word of English and decides that he will become a movie star and much more and that is exactly what he did! He is also a supporter of the Special Olympics, he organizes the Inner-City Games for youths to help them stay away form drugs and crime. In 1989 Arnold was named Chairman of the President's Council for physical fitness.In 1993 the National Association of Theater Owners named him "International Star of the Decade." He has also received the Simon Wiesenthal Center's National Leadership Award for his support of the organization's Holocaust studies. He even managed to marry into the Kennedy family! Pretty amazing for a "dumb bodybuilder!" Arnold is a true champion in my eyes.
