According to a recent survey by FitnessLink, Arnold Schwarzenegger is the most influential fitness personality of
the millennium and the person most responsible for the fitness revolution. Capturing votes from 36 percent of the
1,390 respondents, the seven-time Mr. Olympia and former head of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and
Sports easily outplaced runners-up Richard Simmons, Jane Fonda, and Jack LaLanne, who garnered votes from
31, 30 and 26 percent respectively.
Publisher of Muscle and Fitness and FLEX magazine, Joe Weider, six-time Ms. Olympia Cory Everson and video
stars Kathy Smith and Karen Voight also earned a notable response rate. FitnessLink web viewers were asked to
vote for three of the 21 nominees. Of the 1,390 respondents, 74 percent were women with a median age of 35.
"Arnold brought bodybuilding mainstream and positioned it as a healthy activity for anyone," says Shannon Entin,
publisher of FitnessLink and co-author of the book, The Complete Idiot's Guide To Health And Fitness Online
(Macmillan Computer Publishing). "Many of his films co-starred fit women, too, like Linda Hamilton in the
Terminator series. The fact that women overwhelmingly voted for him over Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons,
whose core audience is women, is a tremendous compliment to Arnold's impact."
