In my last blog entry I talked about the need to create balance in your workouts. The three main pillars of a balanced workout include cardiovascular exercise, stretching or flexibility, and strength training.

I tend to include “core” conditioning as an add-on. As I had mentioned, one should actually be spending almost equal amounts of time on each of these three pillars in any given week.

One factor that a number of people miss out on when coming up with their overall workout scheme is that of periodization.

Periodization can be used for various levels of fitness, all the way from the beginning exerciser to the high level athlete or fitness competitor – and should be if optimal results are to be seen.

What Is Periodization?

Simply stated, periodization involves having a different set of goals for different periods of time. Athletes are usually the ones who always are on some type of periodized program because they have an ‘off’ and ‘on’ season, so this in fact makes a periodized program a necessity for the most part.

For everyone else, it’s a way of working out that will help prevent boredom, prevent injuries, and help you progress faster than without.
