Real Olympic Winners: 3 Athletes

So the Olympics are over, and who won anyway? Seems no set way to judge that - China had the most golds and the USA the most overall.

That will be argued on both sides I assume, but there were some clear winners to me. The female athletes below didn’t win medals or get the press many others did, but it’s impossible to say they didn’t achieve victory.

Natalie du Toit of South Africa, who lost her leg in an accident a few years ago, became the first amputee swimmer to compete in the Olympics. She swam the 10km marathon open water, and finished a very credible 16th place.

19yr old Polish table tennis player Natalia Partyka, who was born with a right arm that ends at the elbow, made history being the first table tennis player to compete at both the Olympics and Paralympics.

Homa Hosseini broke many barriers when she represented the traditionally strict nation of Iran in Olympics as a rower, where she was her country’s flagbearer at the Games opening ceremony.

Why is Beach Volleyball So Popular?

I queried yesterday why the Olympic javelin thrower from Paraguay was getting so much media attention despite coming second last, and today I again must wonder why beach volleyball gets so much airtime in the Olympics?

I just can’t seem to think why?

Olympic Relays a Series of Errors

What’s up with the Olympic relay races? If teams aren’t dropping the baton, they are passing it out of the zone.

The female 100m relay finals were just run and Russia won gold, Belgium got the silver, with Nigeria for bronze..all unexpected medalists.

The heavily favored female Jamaican and American sprint teams went out, while Great Britain, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine and Poland were also disqualified. All had baton errors…

olympic-sprinters.JPG

The men’s finals did not fare much better, with every single 2004 Olympic medal winning team out; the defending gold medalists Great Britain out after passing the baton out of the zone, the Americans dropping and Nigeria also out. South Africa and Poland also went out with a drop…..this ended up giving the unlikely team from Japan a bronze medal, with the Jamaicans winning in world record time with Trinidad for the silver.

In the end this shows, you can be as fast as you want – you need to hold onto the damn baton.

Strong Woman - Heartwarming

Zekra Zaki, 27, the disabled Iraki weightlifter believes she can win medal in Beijing Paralympic Games. She lost her legs in a car accident at the age of two but believes it was an “act of God.”

”I don’t feel disabled at all” The athlete said after doing repetitive bench presses in training for the Beijing Paralympics.

Zekra is competing in the 56 kilogrammes (123 pounds) category, she believes she can win a medal in China. If she wins she will be dedicating it to her father and her country, saying that a victory will justify all the difficulties she had to face in getting this far.

She is Iraq’s first disabled female athlete to qualify for the Paralympics which will be staged in September after the Beijing Olympic Games, which I think is an achievement all of it’s own. But not only is this incredible woman the first disabled woman to qualify for the Paralympics, she is one of the best six disabled women weightlifters in the world, and even won a silver medal in the Afro-Asian championships in Cairo last year.

This woman has faced such a lot, and had overcome an amazing amount. It’s someone like this that makes me proud to be a woman. She has so much strength, and I really hope that she reaches the stars and get’s a medal…Someone like that couldn’t deserve it more.

Most Popular Javelin Thrower Ever

paraguay.gif

Leryn Franco represented Paraguay in the javelin throw at the 2008 Beijing games

She didn’t exactly win gold – in fact she didn’t make it to the finals, not even the semi-finals. She came second last, in 51st position.

Despite her complete lack of championship form – she seems to be attracting a lot of media attention. I wonder why?

The Inequalities Of Pay Between Male and Female Sport Stars.

I knew this was a problem in the everyday job world but I didn’t realise it spilled into the sports world. Male sports stars get paid more than females. Not just by a little bit more but a whole lot. According to the article I was reading, this should be expected, due to the fact that generally mens sports usually gains more media attention, attendance and sponsership. Yet the participation in the sport is apperently equal. If this is the case, then compensation for the sport should be as such. Women put in as much, if not slightly more effort into this as men do, that and they manage to remain sexy while they’re doing it. That alone should be reason enough for equal compensation. We make the sports world sexy. I mean is the picture on the left, not incredibly hot?

A female football player isn’t paid much more than an NFL cheerleader. There is something grossly wrong with this. The fairest of the sports is Tennis who offer the same amount of prize money for both male and female.

This is a disgusting show of inequality between male and female sports stars. Your gender should not be issue when it comes to how much you earn.

Lolo Jones: Crashing Ended Dreams

Gold medal favorite Lolo Jones of the USA was the picture of anguish after finishing the 110m sprint hurdles in 7th place in Beijing.

_lolo_jones.jpg

The world indoor champion was heavily favored coming in, and looked to be winning until an error which caused her to clip the second last hurdle ending her dreams of gold.

The error opened things up for Canada’s Priscilla Lopes-Schliep and Australia’s Sally McLellan, giving Canada and Australia their first track medals since 1996 and 2000 respectively.
