Shannon Pole-Summers is a powerlifter who set the World Record female bench press with a 531 pound bench.
Earlier this year, the 270lb powerlifter was arrested in South Carolina on charges of first-degree burglary, identity theft, grand larceny and assault with intent to kill.
She had been living under an assumed identity, and after police got a lead they began surveillance on where she was suspected to be living.
The arresting officer was quoted as saying “I might be 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, but I made sure I had my Taser ready,” he said.
Questions did arise about the “assault with intent to kill” with people wondering whether the assault might be a simple assault that was charged higher because of Pole-Summers’ considerable strength and corresponding ability to do harm.
In this deeply traditional culture, it was never the norm for female to participate in sports, but earlier this month Afghanistan hosted it’s first ever female weightlifting contest.
Although mens’s bodybuilding is gaining momentum while women’s bodybuilding is presently still not allowed, it’s great to see progress being made with women now competing in weightlifting.
The bench press segment was won by 36yr old Kobra Dastagerzada, while 17yr old Nadia Sadeghi won the top overall.
