Pacific Games Welcomes Bodybuilding By Rob Wilkins Special Assistant to the IFBB Over
4,000 athletes and officials representing 22 countries will take part in the highly
competitive 12th South Pacific Games (SPG) 28 June - 12 July 2003. Dr. Robert
Mitchell, President and International Olympic Committee Member, Fiji, leads a
dynamic team of well-organized professionals heading up these games which were
first held in 1963 in the capital of Fiji, Suva. The SPG returns to its original
home for the third time, as Suva will once again serve as the host. "The sport of bodybuilding is widely practiced and very popular on the islands of the South Pacific so the South Pacific Games provides an excellent opportunity for the outstanding bodybuilders in this part of the world to compete and just as important develop long-lasting friendships through sport," commented IFBB President, Ben Weider. "The IFBB is particularly delighted to be involved in these games as 2003 marks the 40th anniversary of the Games," said Weider The IFBB is well represented in this part of the world by Warren Langman, IFBB Vice President for the South Pacific. Langman, highly respected in the South Pacific region, continues to demonstrate superb leadership and dedication as he continues to work towards promoting the positive benefits of a bodybuilding lifestyle. The SPG's have the full support of the Fijian government evident by a speech given by the Honorable Laisenia Qarase, Prime Minister and Minister for Fijian affairs. He said "As your Prime Minister, I would like to see the full participation of young people in all aspects of the Games. I sincerely hope that as the host country, we will all co-operate closely together, to ensure that the 2003 South Pacific Games will be the best Games ever." The IFBB joins Prime Minister Qarase and the South Pacific Games Organizing Committee as they strive to make the 2003 South Pacific Games a wonderful feast of fun, hospitality, friendly competition, and enjoyment, in the true spirit of the Pacific Way.
